A bad career coach

A little bot that I hate the most.

I have this idea of a bot that just gives terrible career advice. I love it because I get tired of seeing the same career advice over and over (network, brand yourself, etc). I wanted to see if I could get a bot to give really bad advice, advice that the users knows is absurd but makes them want to see what other terrible advice the bot gives.

I did not make that bot. Instead, I just have a dumb character bot that acts like a guy from the office that you absolutely want to avoid. It’s not even fun to engage with it. Try it out, you’ll see. It’s just kinda blah.

What I learned

This was a fail. I like being able to prototype an idea fast with GPT and then fail. Part of me wanted to keep going and try to get a funnier bot or more engaging character. But ChatGPT sucks at humor. I kinda of know that but it’s always reinforced when I try to do something funny. Maybe if I knew how to explain humor better (I don’t) I could get a better character. Or maybe humor is contextual, situational, evolving in a conversation and robots don’t need to be funny.

I also learned that each prompt should edit GPT’s style in your prompt. Otherwise the default style is this wordy essay like response which isn’t really conversational. I didn’t do that because I stopped caring.

I’m making a note to start working on more character bots to see if I can really get a character that people might want to actually engage with based on character and not tasks.
